If you're in the business of artist management, you have to keep track of a lot of things. Recording artists have to schedule studio time, tour dates, photo shoots, press interviews, promotional appearances and more. When an artist releases a CD, accurate sales figures are essential for business evaluation purposes and for use in marketing materials.

CD Sales Figures

Maintaining current CD sales information is important. For one thing, if a CD performs poorly, a record label may consider changing the course of an artist's career -- or think twice about continuing an artist's contract. In terms of promotion, high sales numbers are invaluable, especially if the numbers put the CD in gold (500,000 units) or platinum (1 million units) territory. Some music awards and honors are based in part on album sales. In addition, first-week CD sales can be a barometer of future success. According to Billboard, a CD's first-week accounted in 2010 for 22.1 percent of its total sales.

Nielsen Soundscan

Nielsen's Soundscan service is the most reliable source of CD sales data available. Soundscan tracks sales at traditional retail and online outlets, as well as at events and performances, via UPC barcode. If an artist's CD is not released through a major label, the artist or his representative must ensure the barcode on an artist's CD is registered with Soundscan. To obtain Soundscan data directly, you have to subscribe to the service. The subscription fees are negotiated individually.

Billboard

Billboard is another source of CD sales data, but actually gets its figures from Soundscan. If you are unable to access Soundscan directly because, for example, you cannot come up with the fee, Billboard is the next best source of information. On the Billboard website, you can look up a CD by name to find its sales numbers.

Record Label

If neither Soundscan nor Billboard will work, you can always get CD sales numbers from the record label. Record labels also get their figures from Soundscan.

This list documents Britain's best-selling music artists alphabetically[1] as well as by record sales. This page lists those artists who have had claims of over 50 million or more records in sales. The list is divided into numerous record-sales brackets within each of which, artists are listed in alphabetical order, rather than by number of records sold. The artists on the list are supported by third-party reliable sources, the sales-figures within which should represent a total number of sold albums, singles, compilation-albums, music videos as well as downloads of singles and full-length albums.This list holds no account of sales after the initial release dates, some artists keep on selling albums they originally released for instance in 1972. those albums sold over the years in their millions. For instance, Rod Stewart, 'Footloose and Fancy Free' sold over 20 million copies after release and so did most of his albums. He should be higher up the list according to the BBC his sales are approaching 300 million albums and this is not including the Jeff Beck Group, The Faces, Pyton Lee Jackson, Steampacket or Shotgun Express recordings.

Constraints[edit]

Although the criteria for the following list are intended to be expansive (including comparisons for total-sales for all recording artists) there are certain limitations and constraints that may limit the conclusions that can be derived from these data.There is no certainty these figures are correct for not all sales are controllable.

Such constraints include:

  • Bias towards acts who have had success in a specific country or region.
  • Bias towards older artists. There is a broader genre spectrum of music to listen to now which limits the number of listeners.
  • Bias towards modern artists. Comparatively fewer successful pre-modern artists will have sold more records, as both global spending power and population have increased. In 1950, the world's population was 2.5 billion; by 2000 it had risen to 6 billion. Also, older artists suffer from bias as their record sales are less likely to have been accurately tracked, and estimates of their early sales are likely to be more vague.
  • Fan sites, press articles and record labels have been known to inflate record sales claims.
  • Inflated claims for artists who performed in different acts during their careers. Sometimes all of the sales data is attributed to an individual artist. For the purposes of this list, an effort is made to separate the individual acts (e.g., the sales figures for The Beatles and Paul McCartney & Wings are mutually exclusive).
